    Mondayitis

Today I scanned some photos at the Rushworth Community House.  One was of my late father-in law, David McIntosh.  It was taken in the year 1911 when he was nine months old and he looks just like one of his grandchildren at the same age.  It's actually a postcard sent to Toolleen post office.  It's in a state of ill repair, so I'll spend 2009 fixing it up.  It'll give me something to do.  The other one was taken of my family in January 1965 when I was 6 months old and Mike, the eldest, (of 7 kids) was 12.  It's historical, partly because it features the newly erected Kodak factory in the background.  The other one wasn't a photo, but it's a recipe from the Brownie Guide Handbook for Fairy Cakes, hich is politically incorrect these days.

    Happy New Year

Happy New Year, one and all.  I would just like to add that I was the one who handed over a wad of 50 dollar notes for the X box/ Guitar Hero package.  The good thing is that we were able to put the DVD player on the other TV as the xbox doubles as a dvd player for the kids' tv, if that makes sense, which it probably doesn't!  That nine msn is utter, utter, utter trash.  It's all part of a social engineering program to render people ignorant and apathetic, thereby making it easier for the totalitarian dictators to gain total control of the universe.  Dr Evil is behind the whole thing.  I heard this morning on the radio that the cattlemen who were kicked out of the Barmah forest will receive no compensation, but the timberworkers who have been put out of a job will.  It's good to know that the Labor Government are so committed to working with farmers, isn't it?!  Meanwhile, the greenies who so desparately fought to 'save the forest' are conveniently ignorant of the fact that thousands of trees have been sacrificed to make way for the ns pipeline, but I guess there's no political gain in protesting about that.  I'm such a cynical old bitch these days!  I'm really quite a nice person, actually, but then even the nicest people on this earth have their dark sides.

    Plug the Pipe

Well, we don't want to plug the pipe, we don't want it to be built in the first place.  It is a waste of money and it's going to produce tons of carbon emissions.  It is the wrong thing to do on about twenty different levels.  People carry on about the "poor, unfortunate farmers" and in the next breath talk about stealing water from us to fill Melbourne's water storages because the government refuses to build any more dams, while continuing to deliberately attract more residents to Melbourne. These so called "water savings" that are supposed to come out of the irrigation upgrade will not be seen for another 8 years and that's only if we receive higher than average rainfall, yet the pipe is being built already.  This proves that the government intends to pipe water to Melbourne even if there is not enough left for the country.  This is theft in anyone's language, and yet, thousands of people stand idly by and let this happen.  Do something about it!  Talk to your local member of parliament and demand an explanation as to why landowners are having their rights abused in the name of the Almighty Brumby Government.  Wake up Australia!!

WOW! It's the Women Of Waranga

O.K. so here's the report from last Friday's L.W.W. session.  It was held at the Waranga Hospital in the day room.  First up we had a couple of women speaking about philanthropy, which is a big word which means that an individual of a business wants to give money back to the community without receiving anything in return.  Actually, they do receive something, because it makes it look like they're helping people, which makes consumers want to buy their products.  Sylvia Admans, from F.R.R.R. spoke about her Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal, which links small community groups to many different foundations who can help financially.  The second Speaker, Jan Mahoney, then spoke about the aims of the Geoffrey Gardiner Foundation, which seeks to help dairy farming communities, which encompasses most of Victoria, apart from the Wimmera, where you can't see a bovine for miles.

    Leading Waranga Women

Well, after a full Friday session on the 17th I was a bit numb in the brain.  I have since found out that I'm not the only one.  We've sort of decided to organise a festival, or feastival, showing off all this region has to offer.  The stalls and activities would be run only by local people.  The trouble is, that sort of thing has been done in this region many times before and to me it just seems like another school fete (don't go there, girlfriend) and, subsequently I'm not too enthused about the whole thing.  But, I'm not ready to give up just yet.  This could go anywhere, and as you say, Bernie, we have to Create and Innovate.  So innovate this, sucker!!!!!   Sorry, I know that was a bit rude.  But what we need is a new direction. We need to do something different, and not the usual crap things that women always end up doing 'cos no one else wants to, like cooking and cleaning up other people's mess.  Alright, now I'm starting to sound negative I'll shut up now.  Stay tuned for some more positive blogs in the future.  Bye!!!

    Leading Waranga Women

On the weekend of 4 & 5 August, I went to The Barn at Bickleys, 30km out of Bendigo.  This was the orientation for the Leading Waranga Women program which will run for approx. 6 months. I and 13 other women of varying ages were treated to mouth-watering delights in the rustic, lavish atmosphere of the famous Bickley's Barn.  We worked hard, though, in a mental sense, as we brainstormed ideas and put ourselves in sometimes uncomfortable situations.  I feel we all got alot out of the weekend, though, and we're all anticipating a bright and exciting future with the program.  Our first meeting as a group will be on Fri 17 Aug, 9:30 til 3:00 at the RCH.  We are all supposed to keep a reflective journal, so I must go out and buy an excercise book for that very purpose.  I went to buy a camouflage jacket the other day, but I couln't find any.

    What's On

It's a cold, misty day and I'm spending it at the beautiful Rushworth Community House, where I volunteer to work as a receptionist on Mondays (and some Fridays).  This weekend I am going to The Barn at Bickley's with about a dozen other women, as an introduction to the Leading Waranga Women program.  This program will run for six months and we will aim to organise an event which will enhance the local community and help the individuals involved to develop and reach their potential. I'm really looking forward to it.

    Cheese Whirls

All right, all right, Bernie, I'll put a recipe on my blog.  Now will you get off my back?!

    CHEESE WHIRLS

    Ingredients:
1 packet of frozen puff pastry
    6 eggs
    2 cups grated tasty cheese
    6 rashers of bacon
    1 medium onion, finely chopped

    Method:
Lay pastry sheets out flat to thaw.  Mix eggs, cheese, bacon and onion together in a bowl.  You'll have to regulate the number of eggs and amount of other ingredients, to get the consistency you want.  It's a bit of trial and error.  Spread gooey mixture evenly over all the pastry sheets, then roll up like a swiss roll.  Return to the freezer for about half an hour until it has become firm.  Cut into thin slices (not too thin) and place on an oven tray lined with non-stick baking paper.  Bake in a moderate oven for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
    Note:
You can put whatever ingredients you like in this recipe.  Try some chopped parsely or other herbs, or sundried tomatoes and olives.  Be creative.  You can also cook them until they're just pale golden, then take them out to a party and re-heat them in your host's oven.  Enjoy!  but not too many, because they're packed with saturated fats, which could kill you!!

Talking about Rushworth Festival of the Birds - Easter 2007

    Quote

Rushworth Festival of the Birds - Easter 2007

The historic town of Rushworth with its population of 1000, is nestled within the largest Box Ironbark forest in the world. This forest supports local community enterprise and has done since the gold-rush era of the mid 1800s. Amidst Eucalyptus oil production, timber harvesting and alluvial mining, the forest also supports a diverse population of bird and animal species, dependant on the variation of plant species which make up the Box Ironbark ecosystem.

The Rushworth Festival of the Birds aims to celebrate the diversity of the bird species (over 200 species) of the Box Ironbark forest in order to educate and raise awareness of the complexity and sensitivity of the environment that surrounds us.

Our aim, among various practical forms of education, is to appeal to the basic human love of birds and to use this appreciation as a stepping stone of understanding to the complex web of life that exists within any natural environment.

Easter of 2006 was our first festival to celebrate a healthy respect for the environment at our back door. The key to our environmental component of the festival was to encourage community conversations about birds. We set about talking to a wide variety of community groups ranging from the kindergarten to the senior citizens.

These meetings gave us the opportunity to present a display of bird’s nests, images and props to invite community participation.

Over 2000 people attended the Easter Saturday Festival & Market.

This approach was very successful and we had a fantastic response to our bird nest exhibition. There was an overwhelming response to the guest speaker from the Bird Observer’s Club of Victoria and all of our community art projects.

The art projects evolved around a way to celebrate and visualise the story of the bush.

In our case they took the form of a giant puppet play.

This was a great way to involve the whole community and educate school groups who adopted the festival as part of their curriculum.

The next Festival of the Birds will also be a combination of environmental and artistic collaboration.

We aim to expand on the exhibition and guest speaker concept (as it was such a success) and invite several guest speakers to talk on various aspects of the natural environment. Eg. Birds, Bats, Insects, Ecosystems etc.

We also plan to run a series of fieldtrips into the forest for a range of abilities and supplemented by snacks of bush tucker and bush history stories so that individuals can experience a first hand taste of the wonder of the Australian bush.

Community workshops will be run through the Rushworth Community House and will take the form of nesting box construction and implementation.

Key features of the Birds Festival is that it is not just a one-off event. It is staged over a number of weeks leading up to a festival finale at Easter. Local people with practical experience in the bush are engaged in talks and workshops, which are taken to the community and held as part of other community events and meetings rather than as separate exercises. Additionally, our vision is for this to be an annual focal event for the town, local community (including businesses), visitors and tourists.

Bernie told me to do a blog

I haven't done a blog all year.  How slack!  Now I can't think of what to write.  I'm just so busy. It's all go, go, go around here (not really)  I'll have to photograph all my artworks (all four of them!) and put them on my space.  I'll just add that little job to my list...that makes about 74.  Bye peoples!
